Why do people get gray hair because of stress?

What does having stress have to do with your hair? Why do people get gray hair because of stress?
It impedes the follicle from producing the melanin, which is a pigment (where color comes from). Once the hair follicle stops producing this it is impossible to reverse the process. Stress impacts the body in a lot of ways in terms of affecting cell growth and follicle stimulation but there are also genetic factors involved. Why do people get gray hair because of stress?
In order to metabolize the energy (and the by products of its overload in our systems), nutrients are utilized. I guess, since deficiency of selenium causes lack of pigmentation (so I've read plenty of times), selenium is the missing component. Much of the soil our food is grown on in the US is selenium-deficient to begin with, so we're already starting out on the shy side.

Tests have shown hair pigment to return when selenium was reintroduced into a deficient diet. Pigment loss, in all cases, isn't inevitable.
