Catalase has been shown to reverse the graying of hair in mice. Very few supplements have it. I am wondering if it is effective. Is taking Catalase supplements effective in reversing gray hair?
Hair graying is a complex process. Plus I would think that any strategy or treatment would have to be local at the scalp level. Graying of hair is mostly pre-dertermined by genetics, though stress of any sort could certainly play a role and other factors that might trigger premature graying.....deficiency in one or more nutrients for example...which could be a form of stress in itself in terms of ones biochemical, physiological and neurological responses to that.
There is some research from one of the world's leading hair research laboratories, based at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Bradford University, that shows that H2O2 [hydrogen peroxide]-mediated oxidative stress is involved in advanced age related [senile] hair graying. This implicates a lack of or reduction of the enzymes catalase and methionine sulfoxide reductase in the hair follicle and the same team at Bradford have also demonstrated these two enzyme systems to be virtually non-existent in the senile graying hair follicle. In normal follicles you would expect these two enzyme systems to be involved in H2O2-mediated oxidative stress repair.

But this does not mean that taking catalase would necessarily help the graying follicle. I don't really know what is the fate of the antioxidant enzyme catalase when taken as a supplement, and it would need to be enteric-coated for starters. You could certainly try it but I would think that anything that might be beneficial for the hair follicle might need to be topically applied, and that might need an effective carrier system.
Good luck.
